Our Place, Our Stories
PROJECT: Our Place, Our Stories was a community arts project developed in Dublin 15, bringing together six artists and a range of local community groups to explore storytelling through performance, spoken word, movement, and collaboration. Supported by the Creative Ireland Programme’s National Creativity Fund and Fingal County Council, the project was led by Draíocht under the artistic direction of Veronica Coburn.
CLIENT: Draíocht
What they needed
Draíocht wanted to document a year-long process in which artists worked closely with community groups to explore the stories they felt needed to be told. The emphasis was on articulation rather than performance, with a particular focus on young people, reflecting the demographic of Dublin 15. They needed sensitive, considered filming that could capture both the workshop process and the outcomes in a way that respected participants and the depth of the work.
What we did
Over the course of 2019, we documented Our Place, Our Stories as it developed across Dublin 15, filming workshops and outcomes as artists worked closely with local community groups. The project brought together a range of practices including spoken word, theatre, and movement, with artists such as FeliSpeaks, Junk Ensemble, and Colm Keegan working alongside participants to shape stories they felt needed to be told.
We followed the process from early workshops through to its culmination on Culture Night 2019, where each outcome was presented on film in Draíocht’s foyer and at a dedicated screening in the studio space, followed by live performances by the commissioned artists. Filming focused on articulation rather than performance, allowing space for reflection, collaboration, and the development of individual and collective voices.
